Universal Instructional Design

By Joan Monroe

Lisa Burton-Grika, Joan Monroe, and Theresa Tsai presented a workshop titled “Universal Instructional Design (UID)” at the Second Annual Developmental Educators’ Summit on February 1, 2008 at Montgomery County Community College.   After introducing the principles of UID, they provided specific examples of UID developed by faculty at the Community College of Philadelphia in the areas of mathematics, earth science (environmental conservation), and English. These examples demonstrated how UID can be used in three major areas:  assessment, student engagement and content engagement.   After discussing the principles and specific applications of the principles, small groups of participants developed UID strategies and ideas to use at their colleges
