Law and Society Week
From February 22nd to February 29th the Center for Law and Society and Student Activities held their Ninth Annual Law and Society Week. Students, faculty, staff and members of the community participated in 37 scheduled events and presentations raging from Murder Ballads: Homicide in Song, to Women in the Law, to the Snitching Project. During the week CCP’s campus hosted well-known Philadelphia journalists George Anastasia, Barbara Boyer, Sharon Crowley, Dann Cueller and Mike Strug. Judges, lawyers and members of the Philadelphia Police Department participated in panels to discuss crime scene investigations, achieving judicial balance, legal resources and address many other issues important to our students and community. For the entire week the lobby of the Winnet Building housed the art show, “Lost Dreams on Canvas: Portraits of Murder Victims.” The show was produced by Philadelphia artists as the result of a partnership between Veterans Against Drugs and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Portraits of innocent people who lost their lives to random acts of violence allowed members of the CCP community to reflect on the devastating effects of violence. Plans are already in the works for the 10th annual Law and Society week that will continue a tradition of providing our students and community with presentations and discussions that shed light on how the law both shapes and reflects the society in which we live.
